The Mets are facing LHP Greg Smith for the first time, so here is the scouting report on the Rockies starting pitcher tonight.
A 26 year old lefty, who tops out at 87-88 mph, has a average curve ball and a plus change-up. He relies on good command/control, but has walked too many guys in the past (87 in 190 innings in 2008), and doesn't strike batters out (less than 5k/9). He missed most of last year with shoulder problems. Was traded to Colorado in the Matt Holliday trade (and was previously in the Dan Haren trade). He also has a good pick-off move.
In other words, the Mets have a chance to put up a crooked number tonight versus Smith, but with J Maine on the mound, it may need to be a big number. Let's hope the Mets start this series/road trip off on the right foot.
