Position by Position 40 man Roster- Luis Castillo

Luis Castillo- # 1

34 years old (35 in September)
5'11" 195 pounds
15th Major League Season
Bats S/Throws R

The Good: Hit .302 and had a .387 OBP last year (major league OBP for 2nd baseman was .336), which on the surface, is great. Works the count well, and saw over 4 pitches per plate appearance last year. Will steal 16-20 bases, and is a smart baserunner. Hit .350 hit Citi Field last year (probably do to the small amount of foul ground).

The Bad: Has minimal range and is well below-average in all fielding metrics. Only had 16 extra base hits in 486 at bats, for an awful slugging % of .346.

Role: Starting 2nd baseman and is signed through 2011 (not Omar's best deal).

My Projections: 550 AB, 2 HRs, 35 RBIs, 15 SB, .280/.365/.340

As a reference, MLB 2nd baseman hit: .271/.336/.417

PS For those who were expecting Mike Jacobs to be previewed, he is not on the 40 man roster as of now; however as the spring continues and if it looks like he will make the team or is still battling for a spot, I will give his scouting report.

  1. The Bad: Often catches the ball with one hand while drifting to his left.
