Jeff Francouer

I know I said my next post would be a run down of the Mets pitching staff, but I needed to address the multiple (sarcastic) posts about Jeff Francoeur, also referred to as Frenchy. You always have to be afraid of guys that the media/coaching staff says that they "play hard every day, and has a great attitude." Usually that means he isn't very good (exceptions of course are Utley, Jeter, Pedroia, Youk). If Frenchy wasn't so liked in the clubhouse, no one would care about him, because as you will see below, he really isn't a good baseball player at all. He would've been non-tendered by the Braves this off-season if they hadn't found a dummy to take them; golf clap for the New York Mets front office. Although I do give Omar credit for how he handled this. He gave John Ricci all the credit (or blame) for saying it was his idea to come up with this trade. Maybe Omar isn't so dumb after all. Jeff Francoeur stats the past 3 years: 2007 .293 BA, 338 OBP, 444 Slug 2008 .239 BA, 294 OBP, 359 Slug 2009 .280 BA, 329 OBP, 423 Slug In case you are wondering the league average for NL Rightfielders was: .266 BA, 339 OBP, 442 SLug. That Slug % is good for 7th best in the NL out of the 8 rightfielders that had enough at bats to qualify. The only RF that was worse was Randy Winn. That OBP % is good for worst in the MLB among Rightfielders, 19 that qualified. THE WORST. OPS (combine OBP + Slug), Jeff Francoeur is 2nd worst in MLB (again ahead of only Randy Winn). Well, maybe he just had an off year, at least there will be stats that show he still is a power hitter. So let's look at Isolated Power. Jeff Francoeur ranks 7th of 8 in the NL. Anyone that watches the Mets knows he swings at everything and never works the count. Guess who sees the least amount of pitches per at bat among all major league right fielders. If you guessed our best friend Frenchy, you are correct! Step right up and give this guy a multi-year contract.

  2. .311 in blue and orange. They got him for Church who was a piece of garbage. At least this guy has potential and has shown that he can be a good pro ball player. Those in the know in Atl said that the fact that he was homegrown and from suburban Atl was too much for him during his time with the Braves.

His acquisition was the highlight of 2009 season

  3. Bobby, thanks for visiting the site, and you do great work on SNY, but I still wish you were working with the Mets organization as a pitching coach as you were when I worked with you in Brooklyn with the Cyclones. One day, one day.

.338 OBP with the Mets. If he isn't driving in runs he needs to at least get on base.

Your people "in the know" in the Atlanta are all drunk on whiskey. They were ecstatic when they found someone to get Frenchy off their hands, they would've been happy with a box of sunflower seeds to get rid of him.

  4. My man Anthony coming through with a blog. I will have to keep checking it out and drop a line or two.

And Francouer is fine. Francouer is not the issue. Pitching however...

  5. Any chance we can include Omar in a trade? Other then Beltran and Johann, I'm not seeing a whole lot of fabulous moves? BTW, loving the blog and look forward to following it as we get closer to another winning (HA!) season.

  6. I did think Omar should've been fired after this past season, but I am ok with giving him one last chance. But his head has to be on the line this year and not allowed to fire another manager.

And yes, I will be addressing the pitching problems very soon hopefully. Life and work is getting in the way!

  7. Omar wasn't responsible for every player getting hurt. He just didn't help himself blaming a reporter for the Bernazard thing. He looked like he had no control and was desperate. If he brings in some pitching (and not typical Met discount pitching) then we wait and see. But if he doesn't or the team doesn't perform well and he leaves it as is, then the door shall be hitting him in the tail on the way out. Either way, I could care less. Hey--he has been busy--he re-signed Alex Cora...

  8. You are correct that it is not Omar's fault everyone got hurt; HOWEVER, he is responsible for assembling a roster that has enough depth. Going into last year people were talking about the lack of depth, but it didn't seem to faze many, as the previous year the big 4 played 150+ games. But once they started to go down, it obviously overexposed the Mets and their lack of depth. And that is on the general manager and no one else.

  9. Fair point Anthony. However, does any team have enough depth to cover what happened to the Mets? They needed an whole new team. At times, you might as well have called them the AAA Mets. Backups are backups for a reason. But Omar does need to do something, at least we agree on that. And then the players have to play and have such a big lead in September they can't possible blow it. But the Phillies are still good and will be a threat. First we chase Atlanta, now Philly. And what is up with Chris Coste admitting publically that he really didn't want to sign with the Mets since he is a true Philly? I mean it's not big deal because once the games start he will play and be a professional, but still, we can even get players that want to be here? Money really does talk...then again, he's got to be better than Schneider

  10. First Met rumor I have heard is Overbay to the Mets, Castillo to the Cubs, and Bradly to the Blue Jays. Not sure I find that one to make sense, but I would sign for that. Overbay has 1 year left (so he doesn't hit lefties...details details). If he is good, sign him up again. If not, maybe Davis is ready from the minors. Also leaves the door open for Hudson. However, payroll goes up. I don't see this one, but not the worst thing I have heard.
