The 33-year old righty is in his 11th major league season and his 5th with the Reds. He's thrown 200+ innings the last five years, and has a career ERA 4.28 (3.84 last year). So far in 2010, he's made 5 starts, and has a 1-2 record, with a 6.37 ERA (3 of the 5 starts he's allowed 5 or more runs). He's a fly ball pitcher in a hitters ballpark, but he has pitched well against the Mets in the past 2 years (if you put stock in that; I don't).
Arroyo throws a lot of strikes, and walks less than 3 per 9 innings. He has a deceptive delivery with a high leg kick and varies his arm angle from low to high 3/4s. He is throwing his fastball at a career low % this year (38% of the time), and it is averaging 87.6 mph this year. He does add and subtract on his fastball, mixing up speeds, along with throwing a cutter, slider, curve-ball (70 mph) and a change-up (up to 25% of his pitches this year). His most effective pitches are his slider and curve ball, with his fastball getting hit hard over the past 4 years. Will pitch backwards (off-speed pitches in fastball counts), and doesn't strike out many hitters (6 k/9 for his career).
