Chris Capuano- #38
32 years old (33 in August)
7th major league season
6'2" 225 pounds
Bat L/Throws L
Profile: Capuano made his debut in 2003 with the Diamondbacks after his first Tommy John surgery in 2002, then was traded to the Brewers in a Richie Sexson trade. He threw 220 innings in 2005 and 2006, 150 in 2007, missed the 2008 season, and only pitched in 9 innings in 2009. He combined to throw 105 innings across A, AAA and the Brewers in 2010.
The Good: Capuano relies on command and deception versus pure 'stuff', using a solid change-up and slider to prevent hitters from squaring up his upper 80s fastball (87 mph). He minimizes walks (3W/9). He has a solid career swing and miss rate (10.4%), which dropped last year to 9%, which is something to keep an eye on.
The Bad: He needs to stay healthy. He isn't going to overpower anyone, but is the definition of a "crafty lefty." Last year he was handled very much with kids gloves, throwing 100 pitches only once, and averaged 81 pitches per start. His slider was well below average last year, so something to keep an eye on if it can return to his pre-injury levels.
Role: As long as he "stays healthy", he can provide league average/slightly above-average league production, all for 1.5 million. I have him penciled in as the #4 starter.
My Projected Stats: 150 innings, 4.20 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 120 strikeouts, 45 walks.
This Weekend: D.J. Carrasco, R.A. Dickey, Dillon Gee, Jenrry Mejia
