Profile: Alvarez is from Venezuela, and was originally signed by the Expos in 2004, but never progressed or made it to full-season A-ball in 3 years (he missed 2005 due to an injury). The Mets, hearing that he was a former Expo, and we all know how much Omar loved his former Expos, signed him in 2007. He wasn't impressive until something clicked, and in 2010 he was a one of the best relievers in the minors, with a 0.85 WHIP (lead the minors), and he was 4th in Strikeout to Walk Ratio (7.0). The Mets added him to the 40-man roster in November to prevent him from being selected in the Rule 5 draft.
The Good: He's a four-pitch pitcher, with a ceiling of a middle reliever. His fastball sits at 91-92, touching 93. He also mixes in a cutter, slider and an occasional change-up. He hides the ball well and creates some deception with his delivery.
The Bad: Before a great 2010 year (in High A and Double A), he was nothing special, and was hit hard when he went to AAA last year. His numbers from winter-ball were OK (9Ks to 8 walks).
Role: He will likely begin in AAA and depending on how he progresses, he could be a part of the 2011 Mets bullpen for the 2nd half.

Video of his Mechanics (only need to watch the 1st 4 seconds):
This is a video shot from the 1st base side. He uses his front side well (which is shown in the picture above), and the ball explodes out of his hand.
My Major League Projection: 25 innings, 4.20 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 20Ks, 7BB.
Next scouting report: Pedro Beato.
